Physical Activity At It's Finest

Cross Country Run

Today the Cross Country Run Team hit the trails at Peace Hills Park in Wetaskiwin.  The heats that our younger members participated in had as many as 104 students running at a time. Congratulations to all of the team members on the awesome job that they did and to each and everyone of them for crossing the finish line.  Excellent job in representing New Humble Centre School!  A special "thank you" to Mrs. Besler for helping supervisor and for cheering on our runners.

A Moving Educational Program to Get Kids in the Game

Thanks to Leduc Parks & Recreation, NHCS will be taking part in the Active Eskimos program which encourages students to get moving for 60 minutes every day and rewards them with tickets to an Edmonton Eskimos' home game.  This unique, in-school program had been developed for grades 3-8 in partnership with Ever Active Schools and the University of Alberta.

Gr. 3-6 students who choose to participate will be challenged to be physically active for 60 minutes every day for two full weeks (October 1st - October 15th).  Students handing in their form for the challenge on October 15th, will then be entered into a draw to receive tickets to the Edmonton Eskimos' game on Saturday, October 17th against the BC Lions!  30 NHCS students will receive 2 tickets to the game, along with transportation to and from the game by way of a school bus!  Tracking forms will be sent home on October 1st.

Weekly Update

The students had a great time participating in the Terry Fox Run/ Walk.  They began the event with a short presentation about Terry Fox and his dream to run across Canada.  They then proceed outside to do laps around the school field.  The event ended with every student having a Freeze.

Fortunately the weather cooperated and we had a beautiful day.  Thanks to everyone for the donations and to all the parents and siblings that came out to join us!

Weekly Update

We are nearing the end of September and everyone has settled in to routine.  It is great to see all of the exciting things happening around the school.

We had our first Emergency Evacuation drill.  We were out of the school with only a few minor hiccups.  With a few extra practices we will be running through the drills flawlessly.  If you would like to review our new Emergency Procedures that are being carried out across Black Gold you can find them on at this link: http://nhcs.blackgold.ca/parents/emergency-procedures/.  This week we will be practicing Shelter-in-Place.

The Health Nurse will be visiting the school this Wednesday to talk with the grade five students about the immunizations that they will be receiving this year.

If you have not already done so, please take a moment to look at the Student Handbook with your child.  You can find it at this link:  http://nhcs.blackgold.ca/students/handbook/
Each student should be familiar with the handbook.  Thanks in advance for taking the time to go through this with your child.

Our Grade 5/6 class has started their yearly fundraiser - the Student Union Ticket Pack.  If you are interested in purchasing either a book or the app, please give the school a call.

Have a great week!

September 8, 2015

Welcome to our second week of school.  The students that changed classroom this year transitioned quite easily.  They are no longer automatically going to their old classroom or lockers. It was quite entertaining to watch them head to their last year's locker or classroom and then do a quick turn around while commenting "Oh right, that was last year!"

Welcome Back BBQ

The school Welcome Back BBQ was held on Wednesday, Sept. 9.  Thank you to all the families that came out to Meet The Teacher.  A special thank you goes out to our PTA for hosting the BBQ.

Cross Country Run

Cross Country Run has started this week.  We had 12 athletes come out to practice.  They are very enthused about representing our school.  Practices will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at lunch.

Student Handbook

Parents please take a moment to review the Student Handbook with your child.  This can be found on our website under both the Parent and Student tabs.  The handbook contains a plethora of information from bell times to student expectations.

Welcome Back

Welcome Back

I hope that everyone had a fabulous summer.  I know that I sure did. That being said it was nice to get back into routine.  It was wonderful to see all the students and some of the parents back at school today. The students were happy to be with their friends again.

At our assembly today we welcomed Mr. Porter, the new Gr. 5/6 teacher, as well as some new students.  We reviewed our school expectations. Take a moment to ask your child about this.  We also talked about the focus for Student of the Month for Sept. which is Respect - Respect for self, Respect for others, and Respect for Property.  Staff will be on the look out for students who demonstrate respect.

Out With The Old and In With The New

Much of Mrs. Sekora's time last June was spent packing up the library portable in order to move the library into the main school.  This is what the old library space looks like empty.

Since the end of August Mrs. Sekora has been busy soliciting help to get the new space ready to be used.  Not only will the space be new, so will the name.  In keeping with Alberta Education changes the new room will be called the 'Learning Commons".

Now that the end of this daunting task is in sight we are excited about having a new space.  Thanks to Mrs. Sekora, Mrs. Austin, and Mrs. Lacey for all their hard work cleaning the shelving and replacing the books.
