Curling Success ~

The Gr. 3-6 students had a wonderful time curling.  They learned how to slide out of the hack, how to throw the rock, and how to sweep the rock.  They also learned how not to fall on the ice.  Some of them learned that more quickly than others.

Dr. Seuss Day ~

Wednesday, March 2 the staff and students will be honouring Dr. Seuss by dressing up as one of their favorite Dr. Seuss characters.

Proper Footwear ~

In the past week many of the students have been coming to school in running shoes.  With the nice warm weather that we have been having, the playground and school field are very wet.  There are many puddles laying around and many students end the recesses with wet socks. Not only are their feet wet but it also makes a mess down the hallway of the school.  Therefore, students should be encouraged to wear proper footwear such as winter or rubber boots until the area dries up.  Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

Staff Planning & Development Day ~

There will be no school for students on Friday,
March 4th as that is a Staff Planning & Development Day.
Enjoy your up coming long weekend!

Please remember that the Gr. 3-6 students will be swimming in the afternoon so make-up and hairspray is discouraged.

Pink Shirt Day ~

Wednesday, February 24th is Pink Shirt Day.  The theme for this year's Pink Shirt Day  is Kindness is One Size Fits All.  Help end Bullying by wearing a pink shirt to show that we are all working together to prevent bullying in our schools, in our communities and online.  Pink Shirt Day comes from two Nova Scotia high school students, who decided to take a stand against bullying in their own school.

A Special 'THANK YOU' to the PTA!

The students and staff would like to thank the PTA for purchasing the Snow Blocks.  Luckily we got more snow this past Thursday so the students have been able to enjoy building snowman and forts.

Curling ~

The Calmar Curling Club and Agricultural Society has generously offered to sponsor curling lessons for our Gr. 3 - 6 students.  This includes an instructor as well as busing to and from the curling rink.  The students will be going curling for the next  two Wednesdays - Feb. 17th and 24th.

Swimming Continues ~

A reminder that there is still swimming lessons.  The gr. 3-6 students swim Tuesday afternoons and the K-2 swim on Thursday afternoons.

Checking in at the Office ~

We would like to remind all parents and visitors to please report to the office before going to other rooms in the school.  Mrs. Austin is not always at her desk and does not always see everyone that comes into the school. In the event that we would have to carry out an Emergency Protocol we need to have all people in the school signed in at the office and accounted for.  We appreciate your support with this request.  Thank you!

Weekly Update Feb. 8th - Feb. 15th

Last week turned out to be a busy week despite the fact that it was a short week.  Here are some of the highlights from the week.

Monthly Assembly ~

This month at our assembly we had two special guests.

Our first guest was our Black Gold School Trustee, Mrs. Eilander, who attended the assembly so as to present some of our talented students with Bus Safety Poster Awards. The winners of this year's bus safety poster contest were:  Megan G, Kylie T, Eryn R, and Erika O

Congratulations!!

Our second guest was Sarah Russell from the Leduc County FCSS.  Mrs. Russell came out to speak to the students about Family Day Unplugged which is happening Monday, February 15th.  All students were given a form where they can draw a picture showing what they did to Unplug on Family Day.  They can then submit their form at the school office to be entered in a draw.

Student of the Month Winners ~

Fairness was the character trait that we were focusing on in the month of January.  Students learned that "fair" is not about everyone getting the same, but about everyone getting what they need in order to succeed.

Congratulations to the following students for demonstrating fairness:

Spencer D - Kindergarten                    Madison M - Gr. 3
Emily P - Kindergarten                        Aron M - Gr. 4
Abigail C - Gr. 1                                 Cody I - Gr. 5
Eryn R - Gr. 2                                     Erika O - Gr. 6
Eva M - Gr. 3                                      Leah B - Gr. 6

Golden Garbage Can Award ~

Congratulations to the Gr. 3/4 class for being the recipients of the Golden Garbage Can Award.  Your tidyness finally paid off.  Keep up the great job!

Family Literacy Day ~

Thank you to all the families that participated in Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27th.
Showing your child the importance of reading is the key to their success.
Think of all the obstacles we would struggle with if we couldn't read. Keep family reading in your daily activities,  just 15 minutes a day can improve a
child’s literacy skills dramatically. Family Day Unplugged is a good opportunity to sit down and READ!!

A Busy Week Ahead ~

Swimming Lessons ~

Swimming lessons for all students begin this week.   The Gr. 3 - 6 students will be swimming on Tuesdays and the K - Gr. 2 will be swimming on Thursdays.  Please remember to send swimsuits and towels.  Parents if you are going to the pool to watch your child's lesson, you may want to take a pair of flip flops with you as outdoor footwear is not allowed in the pool.

Family Skate Day Cancelled ~

It appears that Mother Nature does not want to cooperate with us this week.  Due to the above average warm weather the skating rink is looking more like swimming pool.  By the afternoon the ice is not in good skating condition.  Therefore we will be cancelling our Family Skate Afternoon that was to be held on Friday, February 12 at 2:00 p.m.  We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Family Day Holiday ~

There is no school Monday, February 15th as it is Family Day.  All families are encouraged to Unplug for the day or at least part of the day. If you are looking for something to do this day, there are many free activities in and around Edmonton on Family Day.  Also you do not require a fishing license to go fishing on family day.
