Week of October 29 - Nov. 2

It is so wonderful to actually be experiencing some Fall like weather these past two weeks.  The students are really enjoying the warm afternoons when they go out for recess.

Halloween ~
We will once again be doing our customary Halloween activities.  Students are encouraged to wear their costume for the entire day.  Remember that there are no weapons allowed.

In the morning we will be having classes as usual.
In the afternoon students will rotate through a variety of Halloween centers.
At 2:45 we will be having our Halloween Parade in the gym.

All parents are welcome to join us.  Don't forget to wear your Halloween costume!

Pumpkin Display ~

Families are encouraged to bring in pumpkins to display on Halloween Day.  It is always amazing to see how creative everyone is.  Parents are welcome to go through the Pumpkin display before the parade!

No School ~

Thursday, November 1st there will be no school for students as this is a Staff Planning and Development Day.  Staff will be reviewing the results of our benchmark assessments and then creating a plan on how to implement strategies to support students working below grade level.

Week of October 8 - 12

There is no school on Monday, October 8 as it is Thanksgiving Day.  We hope that everyone has a wonderful long weekend and a terrific Thanksgiving.

Thanks to the parents that attended our October assembly.  Please remember you are all welcome to attend our assemblies!  It does not have to be just when your child is being recognized.  We would love to see you there!

Student of the Month ~

As many of you know, we have changed the way we are doing student of the month.  This year, teachers will only be selecting one student per class for each month.  It is our hope that it will make the award more meaningful to the students.

Our well deserved recipients for September were Brianna L from the  Gr. 5/6 class, Grayson J from the Gr. 3/4 class, Cailey T from the Gr. 1/2 class, and Armony H from the Kinder class.  These students will be having Pizza With The Principal on Tuesday, October 23.

Caught Being Good ~

This is something new that we have added this year.  If a student is seen going out of their way to do a random act of kindness without being asked, he or she is recognized on the next day's announcements.  Their name is then entered into a draw which is held at our monthly assembly.  Students can have their names entered multiple times each month.  They just have to be "Caught Being Good"!

September's lucky winner was Eva M from Gr. 6. Eva received a coupon for the Scholastic Book Orders.

Socktober ~

Each month the WE Club will be doing some type of collection drive in order to help others.  Please keep in mind that these collection drives are voluntary.  You are welcome to help as little or as much as you are able.  The WE motto is WE makes doing good, doable and part of their belief is when we come together we can create an even better world. At our school we want to help others that are less fortunate than us.  We will do acts of service that serve people and communities both locally and globally.

For the month of October, the WE Club has chosen their focus to be Socktober. We are asking families to send in a new pair of socks that can be taken to help support people in our greater community.  We would also accept toques and mittens.  We do ask that items be new items.  Thank you for your support!

Go Green ~

Another change that is taking place at New Humble is the way we do Rainbow Lunch and the LRC passes.  Not that we discourage rainbow lunches or lunches that have items from all four food groups, we are just changing the focus to cover all aspects of health.

This month the focus is on bringing naturally green foods such as cucumbers, green apples, green peppers, etc for snack or lunch.  Each day that a child brings something green they get to add a tally to their class chart.  At the end of the month, the class with the most tallies will do a draw for the LRC pass.

We will let you know at the beginning of each month what the monthly focus is.

Week of Sept. 24 - 28th

Happy first day of winter!  Sorry, I mean first day of Autumn.  I do hope this weather takes a turn for the better so that the farmers can get out and take off the rest of their crops.

Congratulations to all of our runners who attended the Coloniale Classic Cross Country Run.  They all had fantastic runs.  Thanks also to the parents for taking your child to the run and cheering on the NHCS students.

WE Club ~

Our WE club has been very busy organizing events for the school.  If you have not heard of WE before, WE is a movement that brings people together and gives them the tools to change the world. Making doing good, doable.  So at the school level the students focus on doing good for the school community, our larger community and more globally. Some of the events that our WE club currently is involved in are:

Collecting food for the Leduc Food Bank .  Non-  perishable food items will be accepted at the school between now and Sept. 28th.

Collecting money donations for the family of the Principal of Thorsby Elementary.  Mrs. Jubinville and her family lost their home to a fire over a week ago.

To get everyone back into the school spirit, they have organized a 'Look Alike Day' as our first spirit day.  Students can choose people to dress alike with on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Student Enrollment Verification Forms ~

Verification forms have been sent out to all families through the PowerSchool parent account.  If you have not already returned the form, please do so as soon as possible.  Without these forms signed, we are not able to have your child participate in any extra-curricular activities such as field trips.

Everyone settled into routines quickly and are hard at work.  It is so nice to see the kindergarten room filled with more little bodies this year.

Thanks to everyone that was able to make it out to the Welcome Back BBQ and the School Council/Parent Group Meeting.  We do  understand that fall is a busy time for all of the farming families but it would be wonderful to see more parents out for the School Council and Parent Group meeting.  The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 25 @ 6:00 pm.

Friday, Sept. 7 was Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Day.  Students were encouraged to dress in yellow and blue to match the Ukrainian Flag.  Students and staff were treated to a traditional Ukrainian lunch of perogies and sausage compliments of the Parent Group.  Thank you to the Parent Group for providing the delicious lunch!

     11:30am - 1:30 pm
     3:00pm - 4:30pm

Student Absences

For the safety of our students, it is extremely important to notify the school if your child will be late or absent.  If the school is not notified, we are obligated to phone your home or office to confirm the absence.  Students who arrive late must report to the office before going to class.

Alternate After School Plans

If your child will be going home in a different manner than what is typical, such as getting picked up by yourself or someone else, going with another parent, or not taking the bus, please contact the school and let us know of these arrangements.  Often times students think there is a change of plans when really there are none.

If your child typically takes the bus and we do not know they are being picked up, it is our policy to send them on the bus.  We do not want to send a child home to an empty house so please let us know.

Thank you for your cooperation in this manner.

School Visitors

For the safety of our students, staff, and visitors, all school visitors must first report to the office before going to another part of the school.

Student Handbook

Please take a moment to review the student handbook with your child.  The student handbook can be found on our website under parents and students or by clicking here handbook.  The handbook explains things that are happening at the school such as our Emergency Procedures and student expectations.

Student Grades

This year NHCS will be using a new method of reporting student grades.  All grades will be live on PowerSchool.  That means that you will be able to access your child's grades at anytime simply by logging into your PowerSchool account.   As this is a new process for us, please bear with us as I am sure there will be some growing pains.

Reports will be sent home twice this year - Jan. 31, 2019 and June 27, 2019.

Please also check our Guide to Student Assessment and Achievement.  You can find the Guide on our website or by clicking this link Guide.

If at any time you have questions about how your child is doing in school, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.

Week of June 18th - 22nd

It is hard to believe that we are into our last full week of school.  Didn't we just have the Christmas Concert?

It looks like we are going to be experiencing a bit of a heat wave this week.  Please make sure that your child brings a water bottle to school so that they can drink lots of water to stay hydrated.  They should also bring a hat to wear outside at recess.

Staff Appreciation Lunch ~

The staff would like to thank the Parent Group for the fabulous lunch that was prepared for them on Thursday, June 14th.  Also, thank you to Pam Hebner and
Cheryl te Reitstap for supervising the students while the staff enjoyed their lunch!

Provincial Achievement Tests ~

Our grade 6 students will be writing their PATs this week.  On Monday they will write the language arts Part B test which is Reading Comprehension and then on Tuesday they will be completing the math test.  We wish them the best of luck on their tests!

School Track Day ~

Our students are gearing up for the yearly track meet which will be held on Thursday, June 21. Lunch orders were due last  Friday, June 15th.  Guest will be able to purchase lunch that day.

We will be following the same format for the track meet as last year.  In the morning the students will be divided into groups by their age where they will compete against other students of the same gender and age.  In the afternoon students will be divided into family groups to compete in a variety of activities with their family group.

Parking is always an issue at the school as space is limited. This year we are asking that everyone park on the south side of the school.  We will only have one event happening on the south side of the school this year.  When parking, please be careful of the students that are moving to and from that event.  Thank you.

We will not be having  a rain out date. The hamburger/hot dog lunch will be served on Thursday, June 21th regardless.

Parking ~

We are asking that if you are parking in the lanes in the middle of the parking lot, please remember that those are meant to be two parking spots.  Please pull up as far as possible if you are in the front of the lanes.  Thank you!
